Ardkinglas Castle stood as a quadrangle around a courtyard thirty metres wide, guarded by corner turrets and a gate tower before it vanished by 1769. Sir Colin Campbell granted it to his son Caileen Oig in 1396 with words about woods growing and waters flowing, binding stone to life itself. James VI later gave a Campbell of Ardkinglas power to search west coast ships, turning the house into an instrument of royal control on the sea. The castle may have fallen to decay, fire or deliberate dismantling, but its shape remains visible in the estate that replaced it.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Ardkinglas Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Ardkinglas Castle was built by the Clan Campbell in the 13th or 14th century and is remembered as a historic stronghold in the Cowal Peninsula, reflecting the region's medieval clan history.
