What is recorded here
St. Patrick’s church in Ballinamore still wears the bearded head of Oughteragh on its south wall, a small limestone corbel rescued from a forgotten graveyard. People once called it St Bridget’s head and gathered there for the pattern, though the carved face looks more like a stern man than a saint. The church moved the stone but never explained the change, leaving the beard and cap to watch over new prayers while the old name faded.
A limestone face-corbel (Wth 0.26m H 0.21m; D 0.18m) from the graveyard of Oughteragh church (LE025-008001-), which was known as St Bridget’s head and played an important role in the pattern there, is now built into the outer face of the S wall of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic church in Ballinamore. It appears to be male as it seems to have a beard, and is wearing a cap that expands into the flat top of the corbel. (Gallogly 1991, 6)
