Architectural fragment in Haywood Demesne

Architectural fragment

What is recorded here

Haywood Demesne holds cut stone windows possibly taken from Aghaboe and re-erected near Haywood House. The post-medieval limestone tracery is finely tooled, with smooth margins and glazing bar holes in the transom and jambs. They sit beside a folly, turning a decorative estate into a place where displaced churchlight still seems to breathe through stone.
Not marked on the 1841 or 1908 ed OS 6-inch maps. Situated at folly at Haywood House. Cut stone windows possibly from Aghaboe, re-erected close to Haywood House (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 394-395). Post medieval limestone tracery very finely tooled with smooth margins and glazing bar holes in transom and jambs. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
