That is the largest surviving fragment of the lost castle: a dressed arch stone, chamfered and rebated, lying half-buried in the field beside the Chair of Kildare. Its edges are sharp enough to show that it was made for a doorway, bridge or chamber, not a common wall. The castle is gone, but the stone still carries the shape of the place that disappeared.
A well-dressed, chamfered and rebated arch-stone (dims. L 0.75m; Wth 0.28m; H 0.2m) was found lying, partly earthfast, in the field to the NE of the 'Chair of Kildare' and may have come from a now levelled castle there (KD017-028002-).
