John Fitz-Edmond Fitzgerald marked Cahermone Castle in 1579, carving his initials into a door arch before the building changed or fell. That stone still stands in the farmyard below, waiting for the house it once entered. The castle is gone or hidden, but the doorway remembers the man who walked through it.

In the farmyard to the S of Cahermone Castle (CO076-027001-) an inscribed arch stone from a door of the castle is preserved, with the inscription 'I.E.G. 1579'; these are the initials of John Fitz-Edmond Fitzgerald, who may have renovated the existing house at that date (Coleman 1915, 165-7).
