Architectural fragment in Bartragh Island

On Bartragh Island, in Killala Bay. The 1838 OS Letters record the finding on the island of a pile of ‘ornamented and curiously cut stone’ said to have been ‘conveyed there from the Abbey of Moyne and from Ardnaree.’ One stone, possibly from ‘either an entrance or a window of an Abbey of the 12th or 14th Century, or most probably of a later date’ exhibited ‘the figure of a person in relief, represented as kneeling and covered with a loose robe. The right side is presented to the view, and the face looks directly across the right shoulder. The two hands are represented as holding a hammer of modern shape.’ (O’Flanagan 1927, 154 (81-2)).
