This green commemorative plaque records: Near this spot Anthony Ashley-Cooper, afterwards 7th Earl of Shaftesbury KG, while yet a boy in Harrow School, saw with shame and indignation the pauper's funeral, which helped to awaken his lifelong devotion to the service of the poor and oppressed. Sir Anthony Ashley-Cooper, later the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, was a prominent British philanthropist and social reformer; his witnessing of a pauper's funeral as a youth inspired a lifelong commitment to improving conditions for the poor and oppressed in Victorian England.
