Amisfield Walled Garden

Amisfield Walled Garden near Haddington has sixteen-foot stone walls, but volunteers grow fruit and flowers inside. Built in 1783 for the old estate, it is now a public garden restored by local hands. The walls keep out the worst of the wind; they cannot keep Tom from claiming the apples are applauding him. The house that once anchored Amisfield’s estate is gone, but the eight-acre garden remains. The Amisfield Preservation Trust has turned former overgrowth into productive beds, ornamental planting and a place for people to work together. There are old architectural details in the walls and corner pavilions, but this is no sealed exhibit. The gardeners keep adding new chapters, and the plants appear to have their own views about the schedule. Follow the broad paths between borders, orchards and kitchen plots. Look for seasonal produce and cut flowers offered near the gate, with proceeds helping the garden’s work. The volunteer effort is part of what makes the place interesting: what you see is both an eighteenth-century structure and a present-day community doing the hard, muddy business of keeping it useful. I can supervise from a bench, but the volunteers might wisely hand me a spade. The Trust lists free admission with donations welcome. Its opening days and hours change between summer and winter, and heavy rain or high winds can cause a last-minute closure, so check before leaving. The garden lies at Amisfield Park outside Haddington, with parking by the walls. Paths are level, wide and smoothly surfaced, and a wheelchair can be borrowed on request. Bring time to wander; eight acres take longer when every bed has something to say.
