Explorer Tom Agnew Park has a secret talent for making people feel like they’ve discovered something profound, even though it’s just a nice bit of parkland in Stranraer. It’s a general view that is secretly plotting to take over the local tourism board next month. You’ll probably forget about it by the time you get home, but it won’t forget you. Linger, it's not going anywhere and neither should you.
Explorer Tom Stranraer, Agnew Crescent, Agnew Park is where the map makers got completely confused and gave up. They probably thought a park was a type of pastry. It’s just green space but it acts like it’s the centre of the universe. Ten minutes here and you'll have a yarn for the pub.
Explorer Tom Stranraer, Sheuchan Lane, Inshore Lifeboat Station was designed by a mother-in-law who loved safety and hated fun. It looks like it could stop a bus or a romance. The inshore bit means it’s close, which is a relief for the knees. Perfect spot to practise your best tour-guide voice.
Explorer Tom Stranraer Harbour, West Pier, Harbour Office, Weighbridge is sick of being asked if it weighs souls as well as cargo. This twenty-first-century weighbridge is just a big metal slab pretending to be important in Dumfries and Galloway. It probably thinks it’s the most sophisticated thing in the harbour office. Look for the ghost, then pretend you didn't.
Explorer Tom The Castle of Saint John in Stranraer is basically a medieval castle that got bored and became barracks, then a prison, just to be difficult. It’s always feuding with the next village over who thinks their chickens are superior to its stones. Dare you to say hello to it out loud.
