Adamnans Well

Situated at a bedrock outcrop, at the N verge of a modern roadway. A pool (max. dim. c. 4m), defined by modern concrete walls, has been created from the waters of a spring which originates from underneath the bedrock, and flows as a stream to NE. Immediately W of the holy well is monumental structure (SL019-006002-). There is a church (SL019-007001-) and graveyard (SL019-007002-) 80m to WSW. Compiled by: Patrick F. Linked to Saint Adamnán, an 8th-century Irish monk and scholar associated with Iona, the well is traditionally believed to have curative properties, particularly for ailments of the eyes and skin. Local folklore suggests that the spring’s healing powers derive from the saint’s blessings during his travels in Ireland.
