Abbey Well

Situated on flat ground on the W bank of the River Suir with the chancel of holy cross abbey (TN047-030001) 10m to the W. This well has been covered over in recent years as it is situated in a prayer garden which was created to commemorate the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1979. Linked to the religious traditions of Holy Cross Abbey, a Cistercian foundation, the well may have been used for ritual washing or as a site of pilgrimage. Local folklore sometimes associates such wells with Saint Gobnait or Saint Brigid, though specific saintly connections for Abbey Well remain unrecorded.
