Abbey Well is a circular stone-cut hole in a Cork rockface, hiding behind modern houses and a concrete step. It may have filled the Carmelite friary above, carrying water from ancient rock into cloister kitchens before the estate swallowed the landscape. The well still flows, unchanged beneath concrete and memory.
In housing estate, short distance N of Carmelite friary (CO112-033003-) and similarly dedicated to St Mary; possibly supplied water to the friary (Gillan and Hurley 1978, 33). Approached by pathway between houses. Circular well (diam. 0.65m; H 0.72m) cut into rockface and enclosed by semi-circular stone wall at rear; concrete step forms front and retains water flow. Thought locally to be associated with early Christian foundation of St Multose (CO112-085----).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Dedicated to St Mary, Abbey Well is associated with the nearby Carmelite friary and may have historically supplied water to the religious community. Local tradition links the well to Marian devotion, though specific cures or rituals are not well documented.
