A river-cliff at the Pant Afon confluence consists of Silurian greywacke, formed around 440–420 million years ago through sedimentation and compression in an ancient marine environment. The site is notable for its exposure of resistant volcanic-derived sedimentary rock, typical of the Welsh Caledonides.
