Yew Tree Cottage in White Castle, Monmouthshire, dates from the Post Medieval period, when ordinary life was already dense in that valley. A yew may have stood beside it, dropping needles on windowsills and marking the seasons without speech. The cottage still belongs to the national record, but records do not open doors. Whatever kitchen fire burned there, it burned behind a closed wall, leaving only the shape of a home in the memory of the land.
