Woodstown House

Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge with half-dormer attic, extant 1841, on a rectangular plan. Pitched slate roof centred on gablets to window openings to half-dormer attic, clay ridge tiles, paired rendered panelled central chimney stacks having capping supporting terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on slightly overhanging eaves retaining cast-iron downpipes. Creeper- or ivy-covered roughcast walls. Square-headed central door opening with creeper- or ivy-covered dressings framing glazed timber panelled door. Square-headed window openings with creeper- or ivy-covered dressings framing timber casement windows. Set back from line of road at entrance to grounds of Woodstown House.

A gate lodge contributing positively to the group and setting values of the Woodstown House estate with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such attributes as the compact rectilinear plan form centred on a featureless doorcase; the somewhat disproportionate bias of solid to void in the massing compounded by the diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a graduated tiered visual effect; and the miniature gablets embellishing the roofline. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior, thus upholding the character or integrity of a gate lodge forming part of a self-contained group alongside an adjacent gateway (see 22901819) with the resulting ensemble making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene.
