Wolfe Tone

Wolfe Tone House stands on Wolfe Tone Street in Dublin, marking the birthplace of the man who helped found the Society of United Irishmen in 1791. Tone believed Protestant and Catholic Irish must stop dividing so British rule could no longer exploit that fracture. He left for France seeking weapons for the 1798 rebellion, but British ships captured him before he reached the Irish coast. He died in custody at thirty-five, yet his name still divides and animates Irish memory because he forced different communities to imagine one nation.
