Windmill (Disused)

Situated on a slight rise on a low-lying landscape, the windmill is depicted as operational on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Lewis records that it had recently been erected by R. Jones, the tenant of Ballybrennan (Lewis 1837, vol. 1, 124). This is a conical tower (ext. diam. 8.8m at base; int. diam. 6.2m) surviving almost complete (H c. 7m). The entrance on the ground floor is from the farmyard at N and a wide opening at E led to an attached barn. At the first floor there was an entrance at S from the slope of the hill, and a wider opening at E accessed the barn, which was probably built with the mill. There is evidence of a third storey on the mill. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996).
