Willoughby James Hamilton was born in Monasterevin, County Kildare, on 9 December 1864, entering a famous sporting family where three brothers excelled at different games. He grew into the pale tennis ghost who outplayed William Renshaw at Wimbledon in 1890, becoming the first Irish champion of that grass court. His life moved from a Church of Ireland rectory to global stages, carrying Kildare blood into every major tournament of the 1880s.
