William Vincent Barré died in County Dublin in 1829 after fleeing Napoleon with satirical verses and crossing seas to attack the emperor in print. The German-born linguist may have committed suicide, ending a life of battle, translation and exile inside the same island where distant Barré relatives still spoke.
