William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne, was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 2 May 1737. He became Prime Minister from 1782 to 1783, steering Britain through the treaty of Paris which ended the American Revolutionary War. His reformist inclinations and vituperative speeches made him a difficult colleague, earning him the unfair label of the Jesuit of Berkeley Square.
