William McCullagh Torrens was born in County Dublin in 1813, where he later studied at Trinity College before entering public life. He spent decades in Parliament, pushing for better housing and fairer laws for ordinary workers. His life ended abruptly in 1894 when a hansom cab struck him, cutting short a man who had dedicated himself to improving the conditions of others.
