What is recorded here
William Desborough Cooley was born in County Dublin, Ireland around 1795, the son of a barrister and grandson of an architect. He grew up in that turbulent Atlantic world where maps were weapons and memory was law. He learned to doubt pretty stories, to test whether distance and desire had twisted the truth. That habit of suspicion, not pride, shaped his life.
