Whiddy Island disaster

maritime disaster

What is recorded here

At 1:00 am on 8 January 1979, the oil tanker Betelgeuse exploded at the Whiddy Island jetty in Bantry Bay, killing fifty people and leaving only twenty-seven bodies recoverable. The massive concrete structure had been built to handle giant ships, but structural failure during discharge turned that capacity into a trap. A Dutch diver died later during salvage, adding one more ghost to the black water.
