Wenvoe Castle rose in the 1770s when Peter Birt demolished a rambling predecessor to build a Georgian Gothic mansion with octagonal towers. Visitors called it charming bad taste or handsome commodious, proving the house demanded a decision rather than passive admiration. Fire consumed most of that bold structure in the early twenty-first century, leaving only a pavilion and stable block to mark the hill where medieval walls also crumbled.
