Marian and her sisters flew kites above the gate lodge while the west entrance stood empty. They tied ribbon to the string and watched it climb past the gatepiers. When the ribbon escaped, it landed on the castle wall. They retrieved it with a long pole and kept the flight secret until the ribbons faded.
