Wellington Monument

Wellington Monument stands sixty-two metres tall in Phoenix Park, the largest obelisk in Europe, built from granite to honour Arthur Wellesley, the Irish-born Duke of Wellington. Its empty pedestal sat bare for decades after the obelisk rose in 1822 because money ran out before the horse statue could be cast, making the whole structure look like an unfinished insult until bronze plaques finally replaced the missing figure. The delay stretched nine years past Wellington's death in 1852, as if Dublin itself hesitated to celebrate a man whose victories belonged to empires rather than the people watching him pass.
