What is recorded here

Nine metres deep beneath 13 Ludlow Street, a circular stone well waits under a modern building. Built after the medieval town fell quiet, its shaft plunges through soil stripped away in the eighteenth century. The depth suggests hunger, thirst or fear, yet no hand has touched its water for generations.

Just inside the line of the town wall of Navan at S. Archaeological monitoring (00E0354) by M. E. Byrne of foundation works at 13 Ludlow St recorded a well (excavations.ie 2000:767). The well was circular (dims. 0.8-0.9m; D 8.9m plus) and stone-lined with some brick in the upper part of the void. There was no evidence of the town all or any medieval deposits, as levels on the site had been reduced by up to 1.3m, probably in the eighteenth century.
