Well in Clonroche

A sub-rectangular rock-cut well-shaft (dimc. 1.5m x 1.5m) was discovered in the main street of Clonroche in March 2003. The mouth of the well was lined with granite and it had been sealed beneath a granite slab. The well was explored to a depth of 8.4m, the bottom 3.8m with water. There is no local knowledge of the well, but there are newspaper references to it in the second half of the 19th century (MCDonald 2007).
