The ford of Raghra (RO056-018002-) was described in 1620 by Mathew de Renzy as a 'foule and daungerous waye over that reiver weare' between Mac Coughlin's country in Co. Offaly and Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. The ford would appear to have been primarily a wear, which may have been situated where a weir is indicated on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, c. 50m below the bridge (RO056-018001-).
