Wedge tomb in Kilmackowen

On NW-facing slope, on N side Eagle Hill, towards W end Beara peninsula; incorporated into remains field fence. Diminutive chamber (L 1.5m; Wth c. 0.8m) open to W; each side represented by a single sidestone; inset backstone at E end; covered by single roofstone. Chamber decreases in height W to E; stone inside W end of S side may represent some form of entrance feature. Two outer-wall stones to N of chamber. No indications of surrounding mound. Wedge tomb, dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (c. 2500–1000 BCE). Its small chamber and orientation are typical of wedge tombs found in the Beara peninsula, reflecting a regional funerary tradition in west Cork.
