Situated inconspicuously on karst, in dense hazel scrub, on a valley floor E of Slieve Elva. A 3.2m high bench of rock rises 6m to the W and higher ground also rises to the N and E. A very overgrown wedge tomb. On inspection in 1997, it was not possible to photograph. It was overgrown but more easily recorded when surveyed by the Megalithic Survey (de Valera and Ó Nualláin 1961, 2) and the following details are from that report. The wedge tomb consists of an erect N sidestone (L 4.6m; H at W 1.4m; H at E 1.3m; T 0.25-0.45m), a recumbent and partially covered S sidestone (L 4.4m; W 1.7m; T 0.25m), a collapsed, cracked, partially covered roofstone (L 4.5m; W 1.75m; T 0.3m) and a standing but outwardly leaning backstone (L 1.15m, H 0.75m, T 0.15m) with an irregular upper edge. There are two similarly sized upright stones (L 1.30; H 0.7m) set in a line within the chamber, an apparently displaced but upright stone (L 0.9m; H 0.6m) leaning against the S endstone and several other moss-covered stones strewn about. It is not clear whether the upright stones within the chamber are original. The chamber appears to have been c. 3.75m long and orientated SW; its width at front or back cannot be determined. The following has been uploaded: CL005-003----_01.pdf Details from Ruaidhrí de Valera and Seán Ó Nualláin, Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland. Volume I. County Clare. (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1961). Compiled by: Mary Tunney, Olive Alcock and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 28 September 2021
Wedge tomb, dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (c. 2500–1000 BCE). Its location on karst terrain and valley floor suggests possible ritual or funerary significance related to early agricultural communities in the region.
