Water mill

The upright shaft of a horizontal-wheeled water mill was found '…on a boundary rivulet, between the lands of Knocksgeach and Garane-ard, parish of Kilnagross…' in May 1848 (Anon. 1850, 159). The shaft was found '…at a considerable depth, as there was a mound of clay over it…' (ibid.). In addition, the cistern or trough and two pairs of stones that were partly broken were also discovered. The fixed ground-timbers were found in situ, '...showing the size of the working part of the mill to have been five feet [1.52m] broad by eight feet [2.44m] long…' (ibid., 160). The upper or runner-stone measured 'two feet [0.61m] in diameter by an inch and a-half [0.04m] in thickness, at the eye or centre…' (ibid.). Local inquiries in October 2005 in the townlands of Garraneard and Knockskagh failed to gain any information on this mill or on its location.
