Wall monument in Town Parks

On the W side of the town, N of Main Street. The medieval church of St. Nicholas of Myra appears to have survived until c. 1813 when it was demolished and replaced by a Protestant church (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 63). The church is currently serving as a tourist office and heritage centre. According to FitzGerald (1904, vol. 6, 144) there was a late 17th-century wall monument on the N wall within the church. It is described as 'a white and black marble mural monument bearing the Power coat-of-arms, with the following inscription:- Here lyeth the Body of the Right Honble John Power Earle of Tyrone who died the 14th of October 1693 in the 29th yeare of his Age' (ibid.). This monument is no longer at this location. It has been moved to the C of I church at Clonagam near Portlaw, Co. Waterford where it is recorded as WA008-002003-..
