Muness Castle stands on Unst in the Shetland Islands, yet the official record lists it only as an unassigned mound rather than a named castle. That gap between the visible ruin and the buried label suggests the land still holds more of the story than the survey admitted. The castle may have worn itself into a mound, or the mound may have swallowed the castle altogether. Either way, Unst keeps its own calendar of what disappears and what remains.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Unst, Muness Castle as Mound (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Muness Castle, located on the Shetland island of Unst, was built in the late 16th century by Laurence Bruce, 2nd Lord Bruce of Cultmalindie, as a defensive stronghold. It is important as one of the northernmost castles in the British Isles and as a symbol of the strategic significance of the Shetland Islands during the late medieval period.
