Freestanding gateway, built c.1845, as entrance to Queen's College. Pointed arch vehicular entrance with lower pedestrian entrance to north, set in squared limestone crenellated wall with central carved crest. Stepped ashlar surrounds to gateways with wrought-iron gates. Now forms entrance to University College Cork.

A finely proportioned gateway incorporating high quality stonework, seen particularly in the carved plaque and cut stone dressings. The excellent wrought-iron work is by Jonathan Perry. Its Gothic Revival design makes it a picturesque addition to the streetscape, while it forms part of a group with the other campus buildings.
