Turreenneefa

Penitential station

What is recorded here

On a narrow level rock-strewn terrace on a moderately steep E-facing slope. Indicated and named ‘Turrenneefa’ on the 1915 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, a name that might be translated as ‘the little tower of the saint’. On inspection in 1997 there were no visible remains. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 10 May 2021
Linked to a local saint, possibly St. Fiachra or a similarly named early Christian figure, the name 'Turrenneefa' suggests a small oratory or holy site associated with saintly veneration. The tradition of holy wells and sacred sites in such locations often includes practices of pilgrimage, healing rituals, and the leaving of offerings.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
