Tullymagawly

According to Cox (1972, 155) 'in Tully townland is the last seat of the Magawlys of Calry. Their old house a modest one still stands and nearby is a high wall of old masonry containing a few splayed windows measuring 4" by 15". The wall would appear to have once surrounded an older building or 'castle' '. Cox appears to be describing the possible remains of a bawn wall which enclosed an old building possibly a castle that was replaced in the 18th century by the present house marked Tullymagawly on the OS 6-inch maps. The castle was associated with the Magawly family of Calry, who held it until at least the early 18th century. It is remembered as the last seat of this historic Irish family and as a modest example of domestic architecture from that period.
