Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Torphichen, East Refuge Stone as Sanctuary Marker (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1km. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The East Refuge Stone at Torphichen is associated with the medieval Torphichen Preceptory, a Knights Hospitaller site, and may have marked a sanctuary or place of safety within a broader network of religious and protective sites. Sanctuary stones were often linked to local saints or Christian traditions offering refuge to the accused or vulnerable.
