Tomona Castle stood on marsh and rock at Youghal Bay, but by 1654 only ruined walls remained beside Lough Derg. A modern house now occupies the site, leaving no visible trace of the castle above ground. Whatever life moved through those walls has been erased from sight, preserved only in the castle's absence.
Situated in an area of marsh and rock outcrop on the N shore of Youghal Bay along the E side of Lough Derg. A castle is described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'an old ruined castle the walls onely standing' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 299). It is also depicted on the Down Survey maps of 1654-7 (NLI MS 721). No visible trace above ground; modern house built on site of castle.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Tomona Castle was built in the 15th century, likely by the Fitzgerald earls of Desmond, who controlled much of the region during that period. It is remembered for its strategic position along Lough Derg and its mention in the 1654 Civil Survey, reflecting its status as a medieval stronghold in a contested area.
This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
