Tommy McKearney was born in Lurgan, County Armagh, in 1952, the same year the state began dividing children by belief. He joined the Provisional IRA after internment collapsed his teaching dreams, then lost three brothers to bombs, guns and shop-floor murder before he died young on a hunger strike. His body became a weapon against a prison that would not even call him a prisoner.
