Tomás Ó Canainn

Tomás Ó Canainn was born in Pennyburn, County Derry, in 1930, the quiet birthplace of a man who would carry Irish music into engineering halls and university lectures. He later became Dean of Engineering at University College Cork, where he took over Irish music teaching from Seán Ó Riada after 1971 and helped keep traditional sound alive inside modern institutions. With Na Filí, he released five albums between 1969 and 1978, blending uilleann pipes, fiddle and whistle into work that remained popular well beyond niche circles. His daughters played violin, viola and cello with him on his last solo release, suggesting a household where music passed from one generation to the next like breath through a chanter.
