Tom Molineaux died in County Dublin in 1818 after losing his boxing title and fortune. He had been born into enslavement in Virginia, won freedom through fight contests, then challenged the English champion twice in London. His end came away from the rings that made him famous, in a foreign city where ambition and exhaustion finally met.
