Nine metres of ivy-clad limestone still stand where Togher Castle commanded the flat Westmeath pasture, its south wall preserving a recessed ground-floor window and a round-headed opening above. Edward Symon held the land in 1641, and the ancient road past Finnea castle still carries travellers toward that forgotten power. The inner floors have collapsed into rubble, but the thick mortar and dressed corners suggest a later tower house that never needed a protective bawn. What is missing is as loud as what remains: a room without a roof, waiting for someone to imagine the people who stopped fearing the dark inside it.
