Toberneebha

Holy well

What is recorded here

On E side of a byroad immediately SW of a small house cluster. It consists of a spring well defined by a circular unroofed drystone wall (D 5m) opening out to N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
Toberneebha is traditionally associated with St. Neebha, a lesser-known early Irish saint, and was historically visited for its supposed curative properties, particularly for skin ailments and eye complaints. The well’s circular drystone construction reflects a common design in early Christian and prehistoric ritual sites in Ireland.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
