Tobernapiobaire

Holy well

What is recorded here

Annotated 'Tobernapiobaire' (Tobar an Phíobaire /The Piper's Well) on the Cassini ed. OSi 6-inch map where it is shown as a spring well with stream flowing N from N side of well. Outline of well visible on Digital Globe orthoimages taken between 2011-13. The well stands in the parish of Galbally, in the barony of Coshlea.
Linked to a piper or musician, possibly a local figure or folk saint, the well may have been associated with healing or protection, common in traditions where music or art are seen as divine gifts. The name suggests a folkloric or pre-Christian influence, where wells were often connected to otherworldly beings or curative powers.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
