Tobernalee

In marshy ground, to S of a ridge and on the N side of a road. The well, is enclosed in a concrete structure (H 1.2m; L 1m), open to S. Wood-Martin (1892, 355-6, n. 1) noted that this well was 'formerly held in estimation as "holy"'. Tobernalee well is associated with Saint Nale or Naile, a lesser-known early Irish saint. It was historically visited for its supposed healing properties, particularly for eye ailments, and was marked by local folklore and seasonal rituals.
