Toberaneighvaun

On the SW bank of stream feeding into the River Aherlow, in a wooded area adjacent to a field boundary. The well has been dug into the SW bank (H 1.5m) of the stream. It appears to have had drystone walling which has largely collapsed. Roughly rectangular in plan (dims. 1.42m NE-SW; 1.2m NW-SE) with mouth (Wth 0.85m) partially lined by stone. Water appears to be flowing from this well, though no bubbles to indicate a spring. The OS Namebook (O'Donovan 1840, unpublished) refers to 'Tobar an eich bhain = well of the white steed. A remarkable well, beneath the shade of a thorn tree'. Ash and white thorn are growing near the well. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
