Tilquhillie Castle is a plain but massive late 16th century tower house in Aberdeenshire, marked by a 1576 doorstone and four diagonal corner towers. Its vaulted basement, rounded corners and crow-stepped gables suggest a household that valued solidity more than showiness. People may have lived there until 1948, when the rooms fell silent, but the building reappeared around 1993 after restoration.
