What is recorded here
Crathes Castle is a 16th-century tower house near Banchory, built by the Burnetts of Leys and owned by them for almost 400 years. The family lived there until Sir James Burnett gave it to the National Trust for Scotland in 1951. A fire in 1966 damaged the Queen Anne wing, but the castle still holds painted Renaissance ceilings and rooms named for the Muses, Nine Worthies and the Green Lady.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Crathes Castle as No Class (event) (21st Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Crathes Castle was built by the Gordon family in the late 15th century and is remembered as a well-preserved example of a Scottish tower house, reflecting the power and influence of the Gordons in the medieval and early modern periods.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
