This blue commemorative plaque records: Thomas Warton 1728 - 1790 Poet Laureate, was born in the Vicarage on this site when his father, the Oxford Professor of Poetry, was Vicar of Basingstoke Recorded plaque organisation: Basingstoke Heritage Society.
Thomas Warton (1728-1790) and his brother Thomas Warton the younger were significant figures in 18th-century English literature; Thomas Warton served as Poet Laureate from 1785 until his death, contributing to the revival of interest in medieval poetry. Elizabeth Warton was their sister and a respected writer in her own right, though less well-known than her brothers.
